Dear Readers,

A shocking accident at the foot of Laureles Grade Wednesday actually turned out to be lucky for the driver, who was rescued from the wreckage thanks to some quick thinking by a crew of tree-trimmers who happened to be passing by. It also produced one of the most riveting news photos you'll ever see. Mary Schley reports.

Clint Eastwood's next movie promises to be another barn-burner, not only because he's directing it, but because of its compelling and immediate story. I have that byline.

With the summer fire season suddenly upon us, Big Sur residents are shocked to see that quite a few visitors are still making illegal campfires -- some of which have already done significant damage. Chris Counts has that one.

An orphaned sea lion pup was rescued from Carmel Point Monday, and wildlife officials say the people who called them about the little guy definitely did the right thing. Mary Schley has the details.

A business featuring an oxygen bar and aqua massage failed to get approval from the planning commission after some commissioners called it "totally inappropriate" for the town. Alleged scammer and real estate fraudster Donna McGuire was arrested in Santa Cruz Monday afternoon on charges of pretending to be a lawyer. The man accused of repeatedly ripping off the Coach store has pled guilty and is facing three years in prison. A unique concert is being offered this weekend, but you'll need hiking shoes to get there. And my editorial explains why we printed two letters to the editor recently favoring the decapitation of President Donald Trump. (It wasn't because we liked them.)
