A preview of the June 1, 2012,
edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

June 1 - 7, 2012

Dear Readers,

With the deadline just a little more than a week away, a taxpayers' group has launched an ambitious, and expensive, campaign to make it easier for property owners to register their objections to the water district's proposed 'user fee.' Have you gotten your postcard? Kelly Nix reports.

The county planning commission wants the Pebble Beach Co. to be required to build affordable housing inside Del Monte Forest — and for "very low income" residents. Kelly has that one, too.

A Monterey County environmental group is asking for extensive studies of Cal Am's latest water project because it might have "growth inducing" impacts. The hardworking Kelly Nix is the reporter once again.

The would-be developer of a Moss Landing desal plant and the City of Pacific Grove are at odds over who will pay to defend the inevitable lawsuits after they try to get their desal plant underway. The Carmel City Council is spending a lot of time -- too much, perhaps? -- trying to figure out how to cover the deficits in next year's budget. One candidate for 5th District supervisor has collected far more in campaign contributions in the last few months than his competitors. How much should you pay to tear down San Clemente Dam? The public utilities is wrestling with that question. Joe Livernois takes a hard look at the political weather forecast. Tony Seton profiles a Carmel resident who made a lot of money for Stanford University. My editorials ask whether anybody is actually in favor of cutting off water to control growth, and warn what will happen if a newspaper decides it doesn't like you. And if you're wondering about those unfortunate small investors who were shut out of the Facebook IPO, be sure to check out my hot Internet links.
