Police log: Squirrel causes more trouble

HERE’S A look at some of the significant calls logged by the Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Department and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office last week. This week’s log was compiled by Mary Schley.


NEW YEAR’S DAY

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A car window was smashed out and a purse was taken on Rio Road. A witness observed the occurrence but was unable to provide any details.

Pacific Grove: Report of a municipal code violation at a party on Ocean View Boulevard.

Pacific Grove: Woman on Eardley reported she quarelled with her husband.

Pacific Grove: Woman requested ex-boyfriend be admonished regarding annoying/harassing phone calls and text messages. Ex-boyfriend was contacted via telephone and admonished.

Pacific Grove: Male reported theft of skateboard he left unattended on the sidewalk on Junipero.

Carmel area: Male arrested for disorderly conduct and for possessing marijuana.


WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Traffic accident on private property on Guadalupe Street. Vehicle was drivable.

Pacific Grove: Civil issues raised over deceased person’s property on 17th Street.

Pacific Grove: Report of annoying/harassing phone calls on Ninth Street. Unfounded due to lack of elements of crime.

Pacific Grove: Seventeenth Street resident reported receiving a phone call from an unknown male approximately one week prior. The male advised he was from a nursing group and was supposed to visit her that day but would have to reschedule for the following week. Resident said the male never showed, so the nursing group was contacted. They advised the resident they had no male nurses.

Pacific Grove: Credit card information used to make a fraudulent online purchase. Reported at a Lighthouse Avenue location.

Pacific Grove: Austin Avenue resident reported a possible mountain lion. Woman stated while out for a walk she heard a loud “growling” sound and then what she believed to be a large animal jumping a fence. She stated the animal then crossed the roadway and entered into the forest area. Woman stated she shined her light toward the animal and saw a pair of green eyes but could not see the body of the animal. She believed that due to the height of the eyes, the animal may have been a mountain lion. Information only.

Pacific Grove: Person reported females crying outside of a residence. Contacted three juveniles on the front porch of a Hillcrest Avenue residence. They reported that their family members had been involved in a verbal altercation. All three juveniles said that the dispute did not become physical. Both parties were contacted. They advised that it was verbal only. No signs of a physical altercation seen. Subjects agreed that the arguing was done for the evening.

Pacific Grove: Woman in the Country Club Gate area advised dispatch she saw a missing person who is the subject of an alert. She advised the possible sighting had occurred at approximately 1800 hours. Area check was conducted with negative results. Information provided to Marina P.D. Info only.

Big Sur: Woman reported she has not been able to contact her brother since Dec. 17. He was going to camp in the Big Sur or Salinas area.


THURSDAY, JANUARY 3

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Embezzlement in excess of $400 reported on Casanova Street.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Lost ID was found on Ocean Avenue; owner contacted.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Vehicle towed from Mountain View per section 22651(o) CVC — expired registration.

Pacific Grove: Man advised dispatch he saw a reported missing person on Lighthouse Avenue who is the subject of an alert. He advised the possible sighting occurred at approximately 0930 hours on Jan. 2, the day prior. No further information could be provided. Information was forwarded to Marina P.D.

Pacific Grove: Damage from attempted forced entry on Central Avenue. Nothing discovered missing. No suspect information.

Big Sur: Woman reported accidentally leaving her iPhone 4 at a business. When she returned, it could not be located.


FRIDAY, JANUARY 4

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Report that a woman south of 10th Avenue on Scenic Road was trimming her hedge. City forester is aware of it.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Traffic collision on San Carlos Street. Property damage only.

Pebble Beach: Report on Club Drive that a juvenile stole a $14,000 golf cart from a local golf course. The cart has been recovered, and the juvenile has been identified. Case continues pending further investigation.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person called to report two suspicious subjects in a business on Lincoln Street. The subjects were gone prior to CPD arrival, but a license plate of the suspects’ vehicle was obtained. Through further research, CPD was able to locate identification of one of the subjects, and he was positively identified by the business staff. There was no crime, and this information case is for information only.

Pacific Grove: Report that a homeless man entered a movie theater on Lighthouse Avenue during a movie. Customer reporting the homeless person said he was unable to locate any employees at the end of a film for assistance. He felt employees should be watching the front entrance of the theater for safety reasons. A movie-theater representative said due to limited staffing, employees are not always available after the end of a film. Representative also said a “homeless” male frequents the theater and is a paying customer.

Pacific Grove: Vehicle 1 struck the rear of vehicle 2 on Pine Avenue. Neither party injured.

Pacific Grove: Burglary of a home on Sloat Avenue. Suspect fled on foot while being chased by the victim.

Pebble Beach: Person on 17 Mile Drive stated a teenager exposed himself to the person’s 5-year-old son approximately six months ago. Case continues.

Pebble Beach: A tenant at a Spanish Bay Circle residence reportedly vandalized and stole expensive appliances from a rental unit before the tenant was evicted.

Carmel area: Camino del Monte resident found her 74-year-old neighbor deceased in her neighbor’s home. The cause of death appears to be natural.

Big Sur: Welfare check on an employee at Plaskett Creek Campground.

Big Sur: Subject arrested for possession of stolen property at the a business on Highway 1.


SATURDAY, JANUARY 5

Pacific Grove: Woman came to the station with her friend and her sister. All three had been crying and appeared distraught. Alice Street resident reported she had been assaulted and raped by her live-in boyfriend. She advised this occurred in Monterey at the time. MPD was dispatched for the primary. SART was later activated by MPD. The 25-year-old male suspect was arrested.

Pacific Grove: Anonymous report of a garage sale on Marino Pines Road with no permit on file. Contacted subject at the residence and advised a permit was needed. Sale shut down.

Pacific Grove: Vehicle 1 struck Vehicle 2 (parked) on Forest Avenue and left scene.

Pacific Grove: Subject contacted while lying on the ground on Arkwright Court. Unknown length of time the subject was down. Subject had dried blood on the face. Subject transported to CHOMP.

Pacific Grove: Monarch Lane resident reported his girlfriend missing when she did not call him to check in.

Pebble Beach: A nurse at CHOMP reported an elderly patient might have been sexually assaulted in the area of the Holman Highway and Highway 1. Upon further investigation, the deputy investigating the case determined the sexual assault never occurred. Case closed.


SUNDAY, JANUARY 6

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject reported the loss of a ring set while on Carmel Beach on Jan. 2.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A 70-year-old male was stopped on Torres Street and cited for driving without a license.

Pacific Grove: A 21-year-old male sprayed pepper spray on another party while they were arguing in their Ransford Avenue residence. Suspect arrested, booked at PGPD and released on bail.

Pacific Grove: Water runoff was creating a hazardous condition on Buena Vista Avenue.

Pacific Grove: Report of child neglect and malnutrition at a Lincoln Avenue residence. Investigation revealed complaint was unfounded.

Pacific Grove: Report of a male driving under the influence. The 73-year-old was contacted on Pine Avenue and found to be driving under the influence and on a suspended driver’s license. Suspect arrested, booked and released on citation.

Pacific Grove: Noise disturbance on Second Street. Daughter refused to go home with father.

Carmel Valley: A male was arrested on Carmel Valley Road by CHP for DUI.


MONDAY, JANUARY 7

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Cellular phone found on the roadway on Dolores Street in the commercial district. Owner is unknown. Held at CPD for safekeeping.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: While backing out of a parking stall on Eighth Avenue, driver backed into another vehicle, causing minor damage to the grill of the parked vehicle. No injuries.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Purchases from various retailers found abandoned at a store on Ocean Avenue during December were turned over to CPD for safekeeping or return to owner.

Pacific Grove: Conducted security checks at school campuses.

Pacific Grove: Dispatched to a report of a male who fell while riding his bike on Ocean View. Male claimed that falling off bike was due to poorly maintained roadway and that he planned on suing the city for damages. Subject declined medical attention. The roadway, bike and abrasion on knee were photographed. Information only.

Pacific Grove: Responded with Monterey Fire and ambulance to a child who was bitten by a squirrel on Ocean View Boulevard. Father stated that they were playing in the park, and his son was standing still when a squirrel walked up to him and bit him on the left pointer finger. Family stated that no one was feeding the squirrels, just looking at them when one must have mistaken his son’s finger for a peanut. Fire and ambulance treated the child on scene. Nothing further.

Pacific Grove: Hit-and-run at Country Club Gate. No leads.

Pacific Grove: Husband, age 27, pushed wife during an argument on Lincoln Avenue and threatened her. Husband then restrained his wife when she tried to exit their vehicle. Husband arrested and booked at PGPD before transport to county jail.

Carmel area: Victim reported the theft of jewelry from his home on Seventh Avenue.
