Police log: Were they wanted or just having fun?

HERE’S A look at some of the significant calls logged by the Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Department, the Carmel Fire Department and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office last week. This week’s log was compiled by Mary Brownfield.
SATURDAY, MAY 22
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A couple a 39-year-old male and a 35-year-old female were arrested on Junipero for public intoxication. Both were transported and booked into MPD jail.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen found a loose dog on 10th Avenue while walking home. The citizen returned home with the dog and attempted to contact the owner via I.D. information on the collar. A message was left on a voicemail for the dog owner. Animal control officer was contacted and responded to take care of found dog. The dog owner was located while attempting to find her dog. Information was obtained, and dog was released to the owner with a warning.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Out-of-state drivers license found in the business district on San Carlos Street.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Vehicle towed from Ocean Avenue for registration expired more than six months.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine dispatched to a residence on San Antonio Avenue for a service call. Arrived on scene to find a water heater with a pilot light which had gone out. The unit has an automatic starting system which firefighters re-lit at the owner’s request.
Carmel Valley: Battery reportedly occurred during an argument between renter and subletter on Holman Road.
SUNDAY, MAY 23
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen had parked her unlocked vehicle at Scenic Road and 13th Avenue to walk her dog on the beach. Upon returning, she found that someone had entered it. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed that her mobile telephone had been taken. The citizen did not wish to make a formal report of the incident, but she wished to update police on the matter.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A Carmel resident responded to the CPD and reported a past-tense, property-damage-only, hit-and-run vehicle collision that occurred on Mission Street north of Sixth Avenue. The driver who hit the victim’s vehicle left the scene without identifying herself.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen contacted an officer regarding a dog she found in the roadway on Scenic at 11th. Officer secured the dog in the police vehicle until the owner was located on the beach at the surf event. Information was obtained, and a warning was given.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person reported finding a bag on Ocean Avenue belonging to a citizen visiting the city. The owner was soon located, and the property was returned.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: San Antonio Avenue resident called in regards to a resident who may have been responsible for damaging his vehicle because of a parking rights issue. The resident/homeowner was interviewed. All parties were counseled. No further action.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Camera case and lens found on Del Mar beach.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Ocean Avenue restaurant owner called to report an unwanted patron who was unable to pay his food bill.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine dispatched to Scenic and 11th for an outside trash receptacle fire. Extinguishment of a smoldering debris fire. Contained within the metal container.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine dispatched to Carmel Beach near 13th for a smoke or odor removal. Arrived on scene and found a large log on beach with active fire. Fire extinguishment with Class A foam to mitigate the hazard.
Carmel Valley: A large vacant building at Punta del Monte and Calle de la Ventana that once was part of the Robles Del Rio Lodge was completely destroyed by fire. The fire department hasn’t yet determined what caused the fire.
Carmel Valley: Subject at De los Helechos and Lazy Oaks was taken to the hospital so that he could be treated by medical professionals due to his bizarre behavior (5150 W&I).
Carmel area: Suspect at Ocean Avenue and Highway 1 was the driver of a vehicle stopped for vehicle code violations. Suspect showed objective signs of being under the influence of alcohol. CHP responded, evaluated and subsequently arrested the male suspect for DUI.

Carmel area: Person at a Crossroads business reported that a customer was unable to pay his bill due to his debit card being declined. The issue was resolved when another customer offered to pay the bill.
Pebble Beach: Person requested a civil standby at his residence in regards to picking up some personal items.
Carmel Valley: Subject was using a spotting scope. Had been erroneously reported as a sniper.
Big Sur: Deputies responded to a possible suicide.
Carmel area: Vehicle at Carmel Valley Road and Carmel Rancho Boulevard towed for expired registration of more than three years, and driver cited.
MONDAY, MAY 24
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Driver stated that a road-rage incident occurred which started on Highway 1 and Munras, and ended near the department on Junipero Street. The driver of a dark pickup truck left the scene. The person was counseled.
Carmel area: Lazarro Drive resident thought a teenage male was outside her residence at night making ghostlike noises. Resident also thought the male drove her car and replaced it with an identical one until he returned it.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Briefcase found on Monte Verde Street turned in to CPD.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Chain found on Scenic Road turned in to CPD.Carmel-by-the-Sea: Santa Rita Street residents reported a series of emails they had received from the husband’s ex-wife. Residents said that the ex-wife has continued the annoying and harassing contact for nearly four years and counting. A review of the emails determined that they were not threatening in nature from either party. Residents requested that the incident be documented.
Pebble Beach: Victim reported that the stone to her ring fell out while she was attending a function at Pebble Beach.
Carmel Valley: Resident reported suspicious activity involving the Internet.
TUESDAY, MAY 25
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Dog found loose near Highway 1. Dog turned over to CPD for safekeeping. Dog returned to owner at 1020 hours.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject struck a parked vehicle on Monte Verde Street while trying to park her vehicle.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Observed a female subject fall in the roadway on Ocean Avenue. She refused all medical or further assistance.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Purse and contents found on Ocean Avenue and turned over to CPD for safekeeping. Property later returned to owner.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Dogs reported barking in the residential area for more than 15 to 20 minutes. Dogs were located in the backyard with the back door left open. Residence was searched for fear of sick or injured homeowner. No homeowner found. Dog was secured in residence and business card left for homeowner. Contact later made with homeowner, who was given a warning.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine dispatched to Lincoln and Ninth. The incident was determined to be a power line and telephone wires down. Crew secured the area and awaited arrival of PG&E.
Pebble Beach: Resident on Congress Road reported that she had a check stolen from her house, and that her name was forged and the check cashed for $250.
Pebble Beach: Congress Road resident reported that his wife left the house and might be suicidal.
Pebble Beach: Person on Middle Ranch Road called to report that she lost her purse which contained credit cards and her cell phone.
Carmel Valley: Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 26
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Past-tense hit-and-run collision on Eighth Avenue.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine dispatched to Torres and Third for a water leak in the residential service between the meter and the home. Crew shut off the water, and the occupant contacted a plumber for repairs.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine dispatched to Lincoln and Fifth for an alarm activation in a multifamily dwelling due to cooking in apartment No. 11. Unit naturally ventilated, and alarm reset by Carmel Foundation staff.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance dispatched a residence on Seventh Avenue for a female in her 80s with ALOC [altered level of consciousness] possibly due to prescription medication. Patient transported to CHOMP by ambulance.
Carmel area: Daughter reported parents missing “somewhere in Carmel” since May 19.
Carmel Valley: Child Protective Services reported an unfounded case alleging neglect and abuse.
Carmel Valley: Resident reported a residential burglary. Entry was made via a window, and electronic equipment was taken.
Carmel Valley: Resident reported a vehicle burglary. Entry was made via window smash, and personal items were taken.
Big Sur: Person reported she lost two dogs on Highway 1 in Big Sur. She believes one dog may have been turned over to a store in San Luis Obispo. She advised she would contact law enforcement in that area.
Carmel Valley: Victim reported stereo speakers were stolen from his vehicle. Vehicle was parked in his garage. He believes the theft was committed by workers who were doing construction inside his garage at the time.
Carmel area: Victim reported credit card fraud that occurred in 2006. She just learned of it when she was contacted by a collection agency.
THURSDAY, MAY 27
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Victim reported his cell phone was stolen from inside the public restroom at a Carmel public shopping area on Junipero Street. Victim had location of phone in Prunedale through GPS tracking. An MCSO deputy attempted to make contact, but the location at the address was unoccupied.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Traffic stop conducted on Highway 1 southbound for erratic driving. Out-of-state male driver, age 57, was arrested for DUI. Vehicle released to sober spouse.
Carmel Valley: Resident reported someone used his name and personal information to obtain utility services in another state. The case was forwarded to the law enforcement agency of that jurisdiction.
Carmel area: Suspect on Grey Goose Gulch threw a kitchen chair at another person that could have resulted in serious bodily injury.
Carmel area: Deputies were conducting a felony investigation on Grey Goose Gulch. A Marina resident delayed/obstructed peace officers and resisted arrest by force. Deputies deployed non-lethal force to gain the subject’s compliance. The subject was transported and booked into Monterey County Jail.
Carmel Valley: Los Laureles Grade resident reported receiving a threatening phone call from her brother-in-law.
Carmel area: Father battered son at Carmel Middle School. Complaint to follow.
FRIDAY, MAY 28
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A male and female reported having their photo taken without permission by a photographer at Carmel Beach. Per demand of the couple, the photographer was contacted and identified. The photographer advised she was taking a photo of the sunset in a public setting and only utilized the couple’s blacked-out shape against the sunset. The photographer said the photo did not depict any identifiable features of the couple that could specifically identify them by name or facial image. The photographer willingly showed the photo to officers at the scene, and it was determined that there was no way to identify the couple by name or description. The information was provided to the complaining couple. Report documented per request of the couple.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance dispatched to a multifamily residence at the northwest corner of Dolores and Fifth for a kitchen fire.
