Police log: Where does the orange Persian reside?

HERE’S A look at some of the significant calls logged by the Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Department, the Carmel Fire Department and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office last week. This week’s log was compiled by Mary Brownfield.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Assisted Monterey County Sheriff’s Office on a reported domestic on Lower Trail.

Carmel Valley: Victim reported ex-boyfriend entered her garage to recover property left behind after their breakup. No violence and no further action desired. Case closed.

Carmel area: A male subject on Lower Trail was arrested for spousal abuse and threats against deputies and resisting arrest.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject was walking into the post office parking lot and tripped over a parking stall stop. Subject was transported to CHOMP for minor injuries.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Victim left her purse in a store on Ocean Avenue, and when she returned, her purse was missing. An area check was conducted but met with negative results.

Carmel Valley: Victim reported ongoing problem of someone knocking down her “for sale” sign for the house. A witness observed a neighbor doing it once before but the suspect today was not seen. Documentation requested only. Case closed.

Carmel area: A male passed checks with non-sufficient funds at a business in Carmel Rancho Center.

Carmel area: Male suspect was arrested for being drunk in public.

Pebble Beach: Mother reported her daughter on Oleada Road was possibly suicidal. Report unfounded.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22

Carmel-by-the-Sea: At approximately 1255 hours, officer received a fax from a clinic in Mountain View forwarding a report of an injury to a person from their cat. The information was incomplete and followup contact was made with the clinic. No contact was made with the cat owner. The information was faxed to the Palo Alto Animal Services in case the incident occurred in their jurisdiction. Followup is pending to ascertain what city the incident occurred in and where the orange Persian cat resides. Case awaiting call back information.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Police, fire and ambulance responded to a 911 call in reference to a fall on city property.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen reported finding a dog loose on Carmel Beach. The citizen searched the beach before the dog was turned over to officers. The dog was transported to the department for safekeeping. No ID was found on the dog. The owner later came to the department and the dog was returned to the owner. The fees were paid and a warning was given. A followup on the dog license will be conducted.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A 19-year-old male was cited for possession of marijuana while driving on Highway 1.

Pebble Beach: A male subject was arrested on 17 Mile Drive for violation of a domestic violence restraining order.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A suspect, age 36, was stopped at Highway 1 and Carpenter at 0227 hours and booked for possession of a controlled substance.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Carmel Fire and police units responded to a coastal incident involving a surfer who got caught in a riptide. Upon arrival, victim had been pulled out of the water by fellow surfers. CFD made contact with the victim, who was uncooperative and stated she was not in need of any medical attention. Victim refused to provide any identifying information to CFD. After CFD left the scene, CPD made contact with the victim and was able to solicit identifying information for documentation of the incident. The victim told CPD that she got caught in a riptide and went too deep into the water while trying to get out of the riptide. The victim did think she was going to drown and was helped out of the water by other surfers. Ocean Rescue had been dispatched but was canceled.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Officers responded to verbal-only peace disturbance between a married couple on San Antonio Avenue. Both parties were counseled but refused to leave the house. Neither felt afraid of the other, and both agreed to separate themselves from each other, inside their residence, until morning.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen requested assistance with locating an elderly 90-year-old male subject on Lobos who failed to meet her at a designated time and location at the Crossroads. Area checks were conducted at the male subject’s residence, the Carmel Foundation, the downtown business district and along Scenic Road and Del Mar with negative results. The citizen last spoke with the male subject at 1030 hours and was supposed to meet him at 1130 hours. After he failed to meet with her, the citizen contacted Carmel P.D. The elderly male subject later returned home, and it was determined that the citizen had provided the male subject with the wrong location for the meeting.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: CPD units responded to a verbal argument at a bar on Lincoln Street. The parties had separated prior to the units’ arrival. All the involved parties were counseled by officers.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Male suspect, age 42, booked at Highway 1 and Ocean Avenue at 2340 hours.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine responded to reported vehicle leaking fuel at Monte Verde and Seventh. At scene, found an older model vehicle with a very small, dripping leak. Secured the leak and laid absorbent in the area of the small spill.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Ambulance dispatched to a medical emergency. At scene, treated patient with ALS procedures and transported to CHOMP Code 2.

Carmel Valley: Carmel Valley Village restaurant reported a patron caused a disturbance and left the scene. No prosecution requested.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 24

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Report of subject loitering in front of a business on Lincoln Street at 0152 hours. Upon arrival, observed the reporting party drinking after hours in the bar. Report forwarded to ABC for review and possible sanctions.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Traffic collision on public property on Scenic Road. Property damage only, involving a parked vehicle.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to a reported wire down at Camino Real and Eighth. At scene, found a wire lying across the roadway. Confirmed it was not energized with the Hot Stick. Secured the wire to a safe location on the side of the road, flagged its location and requested dispatch pass the information on to the cable company.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to request for assistance on Eighth Avenue. At scene, assisted an elderly female back into her wheelchair and into the home. Carmel P.D. also responded.

Carmel Valley: Sleepy Hollow official reported a young male who was captured on surveillance video vandalized the lights at Sleepy Hollow. Case continues.

Big Sur: At 1706 hours received report of an unidentified woman who had fallen off of a cliff at Radio Point, near mile marker five off of Highway 1,

Big Sur. Additional reports indicated that this woman’s husband was attempting to climb down the cliffside to help his wife. The Cambria Cal Fire Cliffside Rescue Unit offered assistance due to its proximity to the scene being only five miles from the San Luis Obispo county line. The Big Sur Fire Brigade Cliffside Rescue Unit, MCSO Search and Rescue Team and Monterey County Fire Urban Search and Rescue Team also responded to the scene. Paramedics from Cambria Ambulance were first on scene and began medical treatment of this woman, a 47-year-old Sunnyvale resident, who had fallen approximately 250 feet. The woman was eventually transported by ambulance to Elephant Seal, where an awaiting CHP helicopter transported her to the Twin Cities Hospital in Templeton. Investigation indicated that this woman was despondent over a chronic medical condition and jumped off of this cliff while her husband had walked back to their vehicle to retrieve a camera. There was a couple who witnessed her jump and letters were found addressed to her family, husband and law enforcement indicating her intent to end her own life.

CHRISTMAS

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Responded to a report of a possible vandalism at a bar on Lincoln Street. Person reported that two male adults wearing jackets of an unknown color and blue jeans kicked the door after being told to leave the bar. There was no visible damage to the door and the locking mechanism was functioning. Responding units were UTL [unable to locate] any subjects matching the description given by the reporting party.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen reported a dog loose in the commercial district on Mission Street. The dog was located by patrol and the owner of the dog was located and contacted. The dog was returned to the owner in the field. Warning given.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Found radio equipment [an iPod] on the beach.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to reported medical call on Monte Verde. At scene, assisted the medic with loading of a patient with stomach pains. Transported to CHOMP.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Coffee roasting company on Ocean Avenue reported finding property. Item turned over police department for safekeeping until owner can be located.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A 37-year-old female driver stopped was for going 40 mph in the posted 25 mph on Ocean Avenue and was found to be DUI. She was arrested and provided a breath test.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance dispatched to a vehicle fire at Carpenter and Second. Upon arrival at 0710 hours, found a vehicle parked on the side of the road, engine compartment fully involved. Deployed hand line and extinguished the fire. Fire contained to engine compartment; no passenger-space involvement. On overhaul, it appeared the fire originated in the area of the battery box, which was completely destroyed. Talking to driver of the vehicle, he had just driven back from San Jose and parked it there five minutes prior. Police attempted to control fire with extinguishers prior to fire engine’s arrival without success.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Ambulance dispatched to a medical emergency in the Carmel Highlands on Cypress Way. Code 3 transport to CHOMP.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Ambulance dispatched to a medical emergency at Carmel Point. Call originated at 1742 hours; CRFA notified at 1803. Patient led to ambulance by fire personnell already at scene. ALS treatment and transport to CHOMP.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A male subject entered a local establishment on San Carlos Street and was suspected of shoplifting and was asked to leave. As he left, he yelled some derogatory comments at the employee and raised his walking cane in a threatening manner. The subject was contacted and was found to have a mental illness. No items belonging to the store were found on his person. The subject was warned to never enter the establishment again or he could be arrested for trespassing. He stated he understood the instructions and left town.

Carmel area: Anonymous reporting party found a set of keys at Carmel Middle School and turned them in to Carmel Police Department. The keys were placed into evidence at the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Carmel area: Victim reported a suspect used his personal information to open a Pacific Bell telephone account in Anaheim.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 27

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Conducted a traffic stop on Junipero Street and arrested the driver, a 56-year-old male, for DUI.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: At 0037 hours, fire engine, ambulance, Cypress engine and Monterey division chief were dispatched to a reported structure fire at Carpenter and Second. En route, Carmel P.D. updated the location to Perry Newberry and Fifth. Multiple explosions reported by CPD. Upon CFD engine’s arrival at 0040 hours, a large amount of flames (30+ feet) were visible behind the home. Perry Newberry command established, orange assigned as tac channel and engine laid in from hydrant at Perry Newberry and Fifth. Handline deployed to rear of structure, where a large pile of material was on fire, spreading into the oak tree and the garage/apartment next to the pile. Initial efforts concentrated at exposures to the garage and house to the west. Ambulance crew sent to Carpenter and Fifth to gain access to the rear of the house to the west as the fence had burned through and radiant heat had cracked windows in the house. They determined it was no longer threatened. Cypress engine gained access to garage. After knock down, it was determined that the fire had significantly burned under the eaves to the garage and burned through the door into the garage. Ceiling and wall in garage pulled to check for extension. Investigator called and en route. The pile of material initially on fire appeared to be construction tools and equipment. During overhaul and investigation, it was determined that construction/remodel did not appear to meet code. Carmel building inspector called. Investigator and building inspector determined this to be illegal construction and red-tagged both buildings. Fire marshall from Monterey F.D. was going to return in the morning to continue the investigation.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance were dispatched to a medical on Camino Real. Upon arrival at 0334 hours, found a male in his 50s complaining of dizziness. Patient treated, loaded and transported to CHOMP by ambulance.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to a motor vehicle accident at Rio Road and Lasuen at 1301 hours but were canceled by police units on scene at 1304 hours.

Big Sur: Campground managers in Los Padres National Forest reported a backpacker had been out for five nights and they thought this was a long time. Search and rescue said it was not.

Carmel area: Reported possible suicide attempt.

Carmel Valley: A Carmel Valley resident reported an argument with his wife. He also reported his wife left the house in the car and had been drinking.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Female driver, age 58, was stopped on Santa Lucia Avenue for weaving onto the shoulder and found to be DUI. She was arrested and provided a breath test. The vehicle was secured and re-parked at the scene.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Sometime during the night, a pile of firewood was taken from a hotel on Torres Street.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Members of a homeowner’s association on Mission Street called to report damage to three newly planted birch trees along the complex. The trees displayed broken branches, but it was not detrimental to the health of the trees, according to the reporting party. The gardeners were contacted and stated the damage occurred between Dec. 21 and Dec. 28. There were no witnesses to the occurrence. Information only at this time. Closer patrol of the area was advised. Pictures were taken.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Found purse was turned in to CPD and returned to owner.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Vehicle was stopped on HIghway 1 for displaying false tabs and the 22-year-old driver was found to have a warrant. He was arrested and lodged at county jail and his vehicle towed/stored by Carmel Chevron.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine, ambulance, Cypress engine and ambulance from Carmel Valley responded to reported structure fire at Monte Verde and Ninth. Engine and ambulance on scene. Crews were told that there was no fire, only an electrical problem in the home. The power to the home was secured and the home was checked for further hazards. Cypress engine at scene stood by at water supply. Second ambulance canceled. Division chief from Monterey reduced to Code 2 and continued in. Monterey chief at scene received update from Carmel Fire engine. Chief and cypress engine were cleared for coastal incident response.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to a reported medical call on San Antonio Avenue. At scene, assisted the medic with the assessment and loading of a patient suffering a seizure. Transported to CHOMP.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A 28-year-old female subject was arrested on Carpenter Street for domestic violence.
