Police log: Weapon brandished by 69-year-old

HERE’S A look at some of the significant calls logged by the Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Department, the Carmel Fire Department and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office last week. This week’s log was compiled by Mary Brownfield.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen reported excessive barking from a dog on Dolores Street throughout the evening and into the early morning. The citizen was also concerned for the welfare of the dog. Patrol officers attempted contact; however, no one was home. A warning notice was left on the gate. A second complaint was received regarding the same matter. On this date, at approximately 1615 hours, the owner of the dog returned home and contact was made regarding the barking and to check on the dog’s welfare. The owner’s information was obtained and the party was counseled.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Reporting party on Santa Rita Street provided documents chronicling a series of events with their neighbor, including littering. Party counseled.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Traffic collision on public property on Carmelo Street. Property damage only.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Reporting party called in regards to a subject digging a hole in a common garden area on Mission Street. There was no damage to any of the landscaping or hardscaping. RP counseled.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject reported he left an unopened Christmas card at a local restaurant containing an undisclosed amount of money. He called the restaurant the next day, but they were unable to locate it.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Parking officer observed a vehicle on Mission Street displaying a plate in the front that came back to a different vehicle. The plate was confiscated and the owner contacted. The owner said that he owned a dealership and the plate must have been inadvertently placed on the wrong car by a mechanic. The vehicle in question was currently registered and had just received its own plates from the DMV. The owner was counseled and told he could pick up his plate at the police department.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Found purse in the business area on Ocean Avenue returned to owner
Carmel-by-the-Sea: On-duty personnel responded to a walk-in medical emergency at Carmel Fire Station. Firefighters assisted ambulance personnel with changing the dressing on the left forearm of a female in her 70s who had sustained an abrasion earlier in the morning. The patient denied any further treatment or transport and signed a medical release. She was advised to see a doctor to ensure against infection or further possible complications.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to a smoke investigation on the north side of Second, east of Dolores, at 1218 hours. Firefighters discovered smoke from a normal fire in a fireplace, rendering no merit to the call as far as danger.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to a fire alarm activation at San Carlos and Fifth at a hotel. Firefighters were met by the fire marshal on scene. He advised no further assistance was needed. The system had been malfunctioning and a technician was requested to respond and make repairs.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine responded to a request for assistance by police at a business on the east side of Mission between Ocean and Seventh. Firefighters were asked to help secure a door left open by a merchant after hours. Upon arrival, the responsible party was contacted by CPD and was en route to secure the premises.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to a fire alarm activation at the hotel at San Carlos and Fifth. Firefighters discovered an ongoing malfunctioning alarm which is supposedly being addressed by the alarm company in the morning. All proper procedures were followed to secure the property.
Carmel Valley: Victim on Via La Naranja reported her credit card and information was used to purchase several items, which she did not purchase.
MONDAY, DECEMBER 17
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Reporting party on Junipero Street called in regards to her and her sister entering into a verbal argument over family matters. Both parties were counseled. No further action.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Purse found at Ocean west of Lincoln. Returned to owner.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Civil case on Mission Street.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to residential alarm activation on Ladera. All units canceled en route per FireComm.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to a past-tense medical call. At scene, firefighters were walking toward the area when a male food server passed on a message from the reporting party. The message was to not come into the room and that they had denied any medical care over the phone to the dispatcher. The waiter stated that there was no medical emergency.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance responded to a medical call on Ocean Avenue. At scene, assisted the medic, who was providing care to a female with hip pain. She had fallen in the street 30 minutes prior. Transported to CHOMP. Carmel police also on scene and reported the victim fell after crossing the center median.
Carmel Valley: Ongoing neighbor problem with mutual complaints of trespassing that stems from one subject today reporting code violations on new construction by the neighbor. Matter documented and reporting party to follow up with his attorney. Case closed.
Carmel area: Fawn Court resident reported receiving annoying phone calls on her home and cellular telephones since September 2007. She was filing a report in order for AT&T to place a trap on her phone line.
Carmel area: Male suspect was arrested for violating the terms of probation.
Carmel Valley: Prado del Sol resident reported her house was burglarized and clothes were stolen.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Victim on Fourth Avenue reported someone entered an unlocked motel room and took a television set along with a blanket.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Reporting party requested welfare check on her daughter, whom she had not heard from in several days. Daughter was contacted on First Avenue and said she was fine.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen reported two dogs barking and howling in the back yard of a residence on Santa Fe. Due to the rainy weather, the reporting party was concerned for the dogs being outside. On arrival, the officer observed and heard repeated barking and howls from the two dogs. The owner was not at home, but was contacted by telephone. The owner will return home and place the dogs inside the residence. Shelter for both dogs was observed in the rear yard. No prior contacts and current dog license listed. Warning given.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Victim reported he lost his cell phone in the area of the post office today. The officer dialed the cell phone to see if anyone had found it, and a citizen had. The officer advised them to bring the cell phone to CPD, which they did. The owner was contacted and the phone was returned.
Carmel Valley: Monterey County deputies responded to a report of a prowler at a Fairway Place residence. It was determined that a male was visiting his ex-girlfriend at the house. No crime occurred.
Carmel area: Suspect overdosed on heroin. He was transported from an Aspen Place residence to the hospital for treatment.
Carmel area: Administrator at Carmel High School reported detaining a student in the office for possession of “H&S” [illegal substances] and a pipe.
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Responded to a verbal altercation in front of La Playa hotel. Upon investigation, it was determined the suspect, a 69-year-old male, caused more than $400 in damage to victim’s vehicle and brandished a weapon prior to exiting. Suspect was taken into custody for violation of 594(b)(1) PC [“Every person who maliciously defaces, damages or destroys any real or personal property not his or her own ... is guilty of vandalism. If the amount of defacement, damage, or destruction is $400 or more, the vandalism is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison or in a county jail not exceeding one year, or by a fine of not more than $10,000”] and 417(a)(1) PC [“Every person who, except in self-defense, in the presence of any other person, draws or exhibits any deadly weapon whatsoever, other than a firearm, in a rude, angry, or threatening manner, or who in any manner, unlawfully uses a deadly weapon other than a firearm in any fight or quarrel is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for not less than 30 days”].
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Reporting party called in to state that he misplaced a black golf bag in the area of Lincoln and Seventh on Oct. 27.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Suspicious circumstances, stolen property on San Antonio and Ninth.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Ex-wife is calling and leaving harassing messages. Stay away order on file as of Dec. 13.
Carmel area: Report of a male subject in a denim jacket yelling threats, possibly intoxicated or a candidate for 5150 hold, at the Crossroads. A suspect at the shopping center was cited for being in possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Male driver, age 19, was stopped and booked at Highway 1 and Atherton for displaying fraudulent registration tabs on his vehicle. He was also found to be unlicensed. Driver was not truthful about his identity and was also on probation. Driver subsequently went to jail.
